Bulid Your List

Posted by On September - 24 - 2009

Who Is Your Audience?

Understanding the type of people who visit your site is a very important task because you can use that information to enhance your site to suit them. As a result, you will gain more loyal returning visitors that come back again and again for more.

What is the age level and what kind of knowledge does your audience have? A layman might linger around a general site on gardening, but a professional botanist might turn his nose at the very same site. Similarly, a regular person will leave a site filled with astronomy abstracts but a well educated university graduate will find that site interesting.

Take your audience’s emotional state into consideration when building your site. If a very irritated visitor searches for a solution and comes across your site, you will want to make sure you offer the solution right up front and sell or promote your product to him second. In this way, the visitor will put his trust in you for offering the solution to his problems and is more likely to buy your product when you offer it to him after that.

When you design the layout for your site, you have to take into account the characteristics of your audience. Are they old or young people? Are they looking for trends or are they just looking for information served without any icing on the cake? For example, introducing a new, exciting game with a simple, straightforward black text against white background page will definitely turn prospects away. Make sure your design suits your site’s general theme.

Try to sprinkle colloquial language in your sites sparingly where you see fit and you will create a sense that your audience is on common ground with you. This in turn builds a trusting relationship between you and your audience, which will come in useful should you want to market a product to your audience.

Why A Website Needs Functionality Not Just Aesthetics

Posted by On September - 19 - 2009

We are developing into a civilization where aesthetics are being favored over functionality. Where it is not about how a product works and its features but rather how it looks and portrays us. Take Samsungs Armani Phone. Sure it looks great, it is small and compact and oozes of designer elegance. However compared to other mobile phones on the market its functionalist is poor. Its menu can be slow, it can be a pain to type a text message with and viewing pictures can take an age. If there is an example to prove that we are more obsessed with style than substance then the Samsung Armani is the perfect example.

But this aspect of our culture is not just confined to mobile phones it extends into the business world too, namely in the form of websites. With technology advancing at a rapid rate the features that we can incorporate into your websites are seemingly limitless – flash, videos, pop ups, the list goes on and on. But at what price is your aesthetically pleasing website coming at? Possibly sales.

Essentially aspects of a website can be broken down into two categories: long-term and short-term. Short-term aspects include design, layout, and aesthetics. This is not to say that the design of a website should be changed every few months that would be to misunderstand the point entirely. By putting it in the short term category we are merely saying that people will only perceive the aesthetical attributes of a website as a short-term appeal.

In the long-term functionality is much more important. Look at Google for example. Its design and layout is fairly basic. However it provides are service , or services, that ensure that millions of internet users use it every day. Google utilizes the concept that how your site works is more important than how it looks and they sue this to great effect. Again this is not to say that you should have a shoddy, hurriedly and quickly thrown together design, this again would be to misunderstand the point entirely, but what we are saying if you need a good balance. Essentially with the weight tipping slightly to functionality but not coming too much at the expense of design.

Where do you start, however? Especially for new users this can be a daunting task. When they think of website design they see line upon lines of endless HTML an code. However web design development have come a long way from this. If you are new to the website scene or, indeed if you are a hardened veteran, then there are numerous resources available on the internet to help you. However a free report called 25 great tips for building high converting websites would be the best place to start. It excellently provides an insight to how a website can be bother aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. It is a delicate balance but one which, with some research and a little bit of trial and error, you can master and turn that traffic into profit.

Website Design Considerations I

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

There was a time long, long ago in technological advancement years when website design was out of the reach of all but the relative few who could write the hyper text markup language better known by its acronym ‘html’ from start to finish.

Website design, then as now, was in high demand for those with the tools and ability to help a client target an audience, develop a world wide web presence, and populate it with fast loading (at 28.8 Kbps) web pages.

Of course those early days saw sprites rendered in 256 colors as opposed to today’s true color programming (eats up lots and lots of resources) , and those historic basic colors ruled in a tile-based world and we thought they were something. Specificity of product, of course, especially if images were to be employed, became the real challenge as they could be inordinately cumbersome and slow to load. The result being one of three options, to wit: (1) wait and wait and wait – maybe while you mow the lawn, (2) become exasperated with the tedious task of internet speed – actually modem speed – to the point of “clicking off” the website, or (3) losing your treasured internet connection.

In 2008, companies such as AOL, Net Zero, and many other Internet Service Providers (ISP) offering cheap internet connections assures that there remains enough people using dial-up to connect to the internet that one doing website design must be ever cognizant of loading speeds. The standard for this measurement remains 28.8K for the Computer Man Website Design Team although no one in the United States can expect to efficiently, if at all, cruise the internet at that speed.

The difference being that almost anyone can design and build some measure of a website in the 21st century with little or no help. Many companies that offer internet hosting also offer basic website design and promotional tools. One can sign up for a sub domain, build a nice web site, add an avatar and promote it to a few search engines in an hour or less.

Missing in this scenario are the tags a website needs and any special requirements of the entrepreneurial enterprise. If the site is personal for family and friends such an under taking may be more than sufficient. All that is left to do, is an e-mail to your contacts to let them know where they can find your postings, photos, etc and you only need to change the web site when the spirit moves you. If, however, you hope to use the site to generate revenue either as a hobby or primary source of income you could be way off base.

Let’s be clear. There is no problem with a sub domain per se or as pertains to search engines. The search engines treat a sub domain as the separate website that it is. Perhaps we can cover this complicated subject in a separate article.

No. The problem is with the flexibility of the primary domain’s shared website design templates. These are templates set up specifically for sharing as little bandwidth (space) as possible with sub domains. When you compare the features and space allocated to you with that of the host, you will quickly see many of the limitations of the majority of these hosts and arrangements.

Best practices, even if using a free sub domain, is to create your website the way you want it with a third party program and upload it to your new sub domain. This can be done relatively easily with such programs as Alley Code, Evrsoft, Coffee Cup, Page Breeze or other free html editors. You can also use free WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get – maybe) website creators such as Nvu or Sea Monkey. For a Free online store creator one might try the free version of “easy store creator”… of course. What else would it be?

For more complicated and user friendly websites most will still need to retain a professional website design team. However you go about designing your website, make sure you understand and comply with the pre-requisites of the host or you will find that all of your work was in vain as your site will be rejected one way or another for one reason or another – too numerous to cover here.

The following tale must repeat itself a thousand times a day across the USA, and there is no telling how many times it happens across the world.

I am asked to attend a lunch with some of the principles of a soon-to-be-launched new venture. One of the principles, to whom I am known, believes that perhaps I could comment on some aspects of the company’s objectives.

As a good friend I return the favor for the lunch by commenting on those areas in which my friend was interested. Before we went our separate ways I asked my hosts what role a website would be playing in this new company? Their response was heartening: “Our website will play a significant part in assisting us to achieve our objectives.”

How wonderful I thought, and so another question followed. “You have told me that you have contracted with a company to design your site, and that the design is well under way. Has your contractor involved you, or any of your partners, in any strategic discussion on how the site will take advantage of the considerable internet traffic that already exists for this industry?” (I asked this question knowing something about what their new organization was going to be, and how it was going to operate.) “What do you mean Leo?” was the reply.

The next few minutes uncovered a number of disturbing details, but the most alarming fact of all, was that there had been absolutely no discussion of how this site was going to rank with the search engines…..yet the design was well under way!!!

There had not been, nor was there likely to be, at this stage at least, any review of the strategic opportunities (and they are considerable), that could be exploited by Search Engine Optimization. There had been NO discussion on possible domain names, key search terms, the role of link trading etc. Why? The answer is simple. The company contracted to design the site has no concept of seo. It is neither an seo firm, nor does it have links with an seo firm.

The story would have gone something like this. Several months down the track somebody in this new company would have realized that there was valuable internet traffic that they could exploit. The principals would have come together and asked themselves what could be done about this? They may have even gone back to the company who designed the original site (in reality this company has done nothing unprofessional-they did meet their original contractual obligations), asking them how to accomplish the task of attracting their share of this internet traffic?

The contractor now tells the client that this will require some modification to the website and that they will set up a meeting at which the pertinent factors will be discussed. Hopefully the contractor realizes that in order to meet the company’s new requirements they will need the services of an seo firm? Now the client is involved in discussions that should have taken place months ago, long before the company was launched.

The client’s focus is disrupted, they are involved in additional expense that could have been avoided and they have a less than positive view of a growth industry that is contributing to America’s global market leadership.

The seo message needs champions!

Website Design Tips

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

When first starting out to create a website, especially if you are a beginner You can create your own web pages using a editor like Microsoft’s Front Page. With this software, you can write your web page like you would any document and then drag and drop images easily. Some practice may be needed, by buying some templates, you can cerate a professional website for free or by using some of the free templates found on the Internet. Mainly in order for you to successfully present your ideas you have to create an effective layout design in an interesting manner whatever your topic may be.

Application of graphic designs
Easy and quick navigation
Choosing colour

Layout format – this will serve as your guide for a good design. Primarily this context must encompass a clear and well organized content that will make everybody understand and appreciate. A simple design, layout makes it easier for you to build your website. The end result will be a website which your visitors will find easy to navigate and easy get whatever information they want.

Application of graphic designs – you must be careful in choosing for the appropriate design that will best represent your projects.

Easy and quick navigation -Always see to it that you are able to include a link that will bring them back to the main page. create a navigation structure that is common for all the pages in your Web.Keep the use of hyperlinks inside your text paragraphs to a minimum. Don’t use hyperlinks inside text paragraphs to send your visitors to every random page of your Web. If you must use hyperlinks, add them to the bottom of a paragraph or to the navigation menus of your site. A key aspect to making your visitors happy is insuring they go where they need to go, quickly and efficiently. Good navigation design comes from experience, and should be one of the most important aspects of your website design project.

Logo – Create a simple logo to identity your website. Have a captivating tag line somewhere with the header, and write an About Us page which describes the uniqueness of your website. These will leave an impression for your visitors to remember your website.

Choosing colour- Have a clear color scheme based on the theme of your website. Choose carefully a set of colors you use for your background, text, border, tables and cells etc.The color scheme expresses the characters of your website and makes it unique and attractive.

one of the most important aspects you need to keep in mind at all times when choosing a website design firm or designing the website yourself. It is very important to remember that most of your visitors haven’t spoken to you yet and your site will be the first impression they have of your company. If your website design lacks professionalism and/or does not reflect that of a well established company, your new prospect can easily loose confidence.

Try and avoid run of the mill things like page counters, java text scrolling, flashing images, GIF images, signs which say “we are not ready.” Or, too many illustrations or animations, black grounds or fade ins.

2. Create a design which coveys in a stylish way what it has to. Instead of using downloaded illustrations use original ones.

3. Avoid things like heavy files or graphics. These will slow down your pages. GIF is better than JPEG files.

4. Think of the target audience and subject being addressed when designing. The overall effect should be that of exclusivity.

Website Design Key Aspects – Design A Better Website

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

The internet is huge. Google alone list over 3 billion pages, looking at one each second of the day would take you over 99 years to view them all!

Many people can do website design, but how many can actually design a website. The design element is so important and so often overlooked.

If you intended to send out brochures to your customers, or potential customers, and the brochure was poor quality what type of image will this reflect on your business…….a poor website will do exactly the same.

When designing a website the most important task to remember is colour co-ordination. Ideally you should strive for a maximum of three main colours, with variations and tints of these. By using more you run the risk of non-matching colours and ultimately less easy on the eye for visitors.

Next comes navigation. Colour co-ordination and Navigation are the top main priorities. If your site isn’t easy to navigate, people will not stay around to delve deeper. Once you site is designed ask some friends or family to test it out. The easier your website is to navigate, the longer people will stay.

Accessibility is a key issue that has been highlighted recently with a AUD$20,000 fine imposed on an Australian website for not ensuring people with disabilities and sight impairments could use the website. These rulings are few and far between (for now) but to help always use ALT tags on images (helping to describe your image), plus use text based links where possible. For further information you can check our

You have your site ready, it’s full of content, great design and ready to hit the super highway – now how will people find you. This is where SEO comes in to play (Search Engine Optimisation). Optimising your site for the main search engines can help bring free targeted traffic to your website. The main and basic rules of SEO are:

1. A good Title tag, e.g for C2 Web Design being a website design company based in Essex, UK and covering Colchester our Title tag is ‘Website Design Essex | Website Design Colchester’. Using your main keywords for your title tag can instantly bring good results.

2. Make sure your keywords appear within your website. The % of times it appears has started to have less an impact, but the general rule is your keywords should make up around 5% of your copy.

3. Request Linkbacks. Make requests for other sites to link to you from the day you website is activated. Search Engines, particuarly Google, base a large porpotion of their listings based on the number of websites linking to you – plus their popularity and themed relationship to the content of your site.

4. Be patient. It can quiet easily take a year or so to achieve a good placement in Google for a popular phrase – but considerably less time in other search engines e.g. MSN and Ask Jeeves.

By sticking to these basic principles and ensuring your site is pleasent on the eye, easy to navigate, and optimised for search engine visits you should be able to claim your stake in the World Wide Web.

Why You Should Redesign Your Website

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

If you have had the same look for your website since it was implemented it is probably time to redesign it. Times change and consumers will be looking for something up to date and refreshing. It is important to test your website to find out where it is that most consumers are leaving. Do some work to implement changes to these areas of your website so they will be more likely to stick around and complete the purchase.

Chances are that your business has grown significantly since you first implemented your website. It is important to reflect those changes in your information so that consumers will be more willing to make a purchase. For example instead of just saying your business was established in 2002 you can add the volume of sales you have had or that you are the industry leader in that market. Anything that will substantiate that you are a reputable business offering quality products or services.

Too many websites use Flash and various other types of animation. As a result it takes time for the web pages to even open. This can discourage visitors and they may leave before they ever even open up the information. If you aren’t getting the traffic you think you should for your website then you need to take a very close look at changing these aspects of your site.

These days consumers are looking for websites that are extremely easy to navigate. If you don’t offer that convenience then they aren’t going to stick around long enough to see what all you have to offer or to make a purchase. While you want the design of your website to be attractive, you also want it to be very simple when it comes to functions. Make sure there aren’t errors on your pages either. Common spelling and grammar errors will be picked up on by the consumers and they will hesitate to make a purchase from you at it makes your website appear to be unprofessional.

In order to increase your amount of traffic, you also need to take the issue of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) into consideration. Implementing some changes will get you a higher ranking and that means more consumers coming to see what you are all about. Make sure they find plenty to interest them when they get there.

Redesigning your website can be a very useful way of getting people to check it out in depth and to make a purchase from you. Consumers are often looking for something new so offering a creative website that is easy to navigate will definitely keep them coming back. There are plenty of excellent tools out there to assist you with redesigning your website so it doesn’t have to be expensive.

If you aren’t able to take care of the needs of your website on your own it is a good idea to hire someone to do so for you. This investment will be instrumental to the success of your online business. You don’t want to offer those that come to your site outdated information or the same look they are seeing everywhere else.

Website Redesign- Planning As Easy As 123!

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

This change has shifted the interface of web design services to a different level and the focus is now on redesigns.

Website redesigning is involves a slight distinction and considerations between mounting and developing new sites. Say for instance, those that have existing sites have more or less enough knowledge on what sites and site formulas work. They have already a grasp about what they consider as assets in their site’s form and function. Recognizing these assets can pretty well contribute to a more prosperous redesigned site.

Other businesses may take a few months to decide in favor of a redesign but mind you, planning a redesign can be as easy as 123! It’s unbelievable but it’s true. Here are the three basic redesign planning tips:

1. Problem Identification. As i have stated a while ago, more or less you have already formed an idea why your site is not doing that good in the World Wide Web. This is because of certain factors. These factors must be avoided in coming up with a redesign. Remember the maxim – learn form your mistakes. Well, this is basically the main idea behind problem identification. This is done to preclude similar mistakes that have transpired in the past. In recognizing these mistakes, the site will intentionally be improved. Aside from mistakes, we should also consider the good points of your existing web design. They can be re-applied or made stronger and better.

Thus, before you plan the details of a re-design, analyze first. Identify the problem areas as well as the good areas. You may ask some of these questions in order to get the desired web site:

a. Is your site functional? If it gives the needed information of the viewers or the target market and they get it quickly and clearly then, the site is said to be functional. It pays to have organization, this is because it will refrain the viewers from transferring from one site to another.

b. Does your site clearly point the ‘call for action’. If you are into selling products, your site must have triggered the viewer’s decision to buy the product. At a glance, they must be convinced and the cobwebs at the back of their heads must be rebutted or deleted.

c. Is your site an epitome of a professionally-made site? Are the appearance, layout, images and content appealing? If not, better have it redesigned in a way to make it catchy, informative and serviceable.

2. Layout the redesign plan. The next thing to do is to establish a workable layout for the redesign. Establish plans how to solve the mistakes in web design. Each issue must be identified to serve as guidelines. Also, problems and mistakes must be given due solutions.

3. Define your Goals. Aside from giving solutions to the mistakes and problems you have encountered in your existing web site, be sure to establish and define your goals to guide you with what to do in the redesign.

The aim or the overall purpose must be made clear and flagrant otherwise your redesign will just turn out to be a waste of time and money. Good luck!

Why Web Design Is Advantageous To Business And Profit

Posted by On September - 11 - 2009

The way you have your website designed is going to influence your online business and how much of a profit you are able to generate from it. There is so much competition online these days that you have to offer a nice looking website or consumers are going to find another one that will. There are some common elements you want to have in place for your website so that it will be profitable for you.

Most consumers are very impatient and they won’t wait long for a web page to open up. If you are using animation or Flash to impress consumers you may find it isn’t working well because they aren’t waiting around long enough for it to open up. You generally have three seconds or less before they will go to another website that does open quickly. Since you will likely have links to various web pages, make sure that they can always access the homepage from any of these pages.

It doesn’t matter how good the information is on your website if consumers can’t read it. Take the time to choose a reasonable size of font and discover colors that work well together. I recently visited a website that had good information but I couldn’t concentrate on it because the background was green and the writing was in pink. While you want the website design to be attractive it also has to be easy on the eyes.

The navigation for your entire website should be very simple to follow. Consumers aren’t going to spend their time trying to figure out how to get where they want to be. Have a tool bar accessible on the top. You can also incorporate simple codes in areas that say CLICK HERE or other similar wording so they can get where they want to be.

It is vital that you make the checkout process as easy as possible for your consumers. It should be step by step to follow and move along quickly. Offer plenty of options for payment including e-check, Paypal, and credit cards. The more payment options you include the more sales you will generate.

It is a common courteousy to have your website set up to provide an immediate confirmation number for them once the purchase has been completed. This way they know their order was processed and they can contact you about it with that number should they need to.

Feel free to be creative with your website design as long as you are able to incorporate these various elements in it as well. You will definitely have the attention of the consumers in your target market if you offer them something refreshing that they haven’t seen before. At the same time though you have to make sure it is easy to ready and easy to navigate. Not everyone has the same level of expertise when it comes to using the internet so make your site accessible to that category as well.
