When beginning a new web site building assignment here are a number of items a designer will have to hold in thought, the razor point of website creation is permenantly in flux, a good guideline is to centre upon the arrangement and ease of use of a web site and then you can work on making it optically dazzling from this point. No one is willing to waste any time upon a web page which they do not realize the functionality and arrangement of at a look. This path is the individual foremost top imperative, usability is the sovereign, if you remember this then you will not be far off the mark. Loads of folks seek to slot in cutting point code in their web site, and no more than a portion of the websites truly require use of forefront edge scripts, why make the site intricate if It does not imply it could perform more efficiently?
So prior to consideration concerning doing coding like this, pause then ask yourself is it truly nessicary? Some of the greatest and most proffitable web sites on the web are built of plain html. Another item you must take into account is compatibility, affecting the way your web site will appear within the various versions of I.E along with further popular internet browsers for example firefox, sea monkey, maxthon and so on. a designer can almost guarantee that some tuning is now needed to leave the whole site ready for this selection of browsers. Another issue to contemplate is screen resolution. Earlier at the emergence of the net (or to be more precise as the internet came to be a household tool) the dimension to seek screen resolution pixels in mind was 8 by 6 hundred. These days because personal computers of today have got alot more advanced and the effectiveness of video graphic cards also improved a lot, this is no longer the target. Web Page Scrolling – Bad Design Or Not?

Scrollling from side to side on a webpage, consider it bad web page design?

One of the problems with web designing is fighting between what works well and is viewed as good content by popular search engines compared with what the website owner really wishes to see.

A good webpage designer has to consider many things and there are plenty of differing opinions as to what is best. We have our own reasons for what we feel is best but ultimately leave the decision to our clients.

It is painful to have to scroll up, down or sideways to navigate page content but there are good reasons for the pain of scrolling from the perspective of a website owner and also some things that can be done to minimize the scrolling. In a major newspaper you pay according location. For example It is proven that higher sales are made on the right hand pages. On a webpage this is the same case, premium space is found on the left hand top corner. Now because of small screens it used to be the practice to keep content in a table and centre it on the page. This would make it fit in the centre no matter the size of the screen. I still like this when I am reading content myself however there is a lot of rental space left on the screen going to waste. Money can be made on that space or redirection to similar content you may want linked in.

If you still prefer centred tables I think I should point out that not all search engines include content found in a table or layered object and so those headings and contents go to waste when it comes to site rank. On the other hand a page with all its contents stuck on the left side and and optimised for a small laptop screen looks terrible on a large monitor. So the idea is to fill up that dead area with advertising and the like. Our preferred layouts do not use iframes, layers, content tables or header and side frames. We have found a simple page thought out thoroughly works better even though the visitor might find themselves doing a bit of scrolling and that the scrolling can be kept to a minimum if you keep the main page content in the places most seen. Keeping the page to a fairly regular size also helps the visitor get the hang of where the content will be found.

Also code driven images or additional scripting set into a webpage, such as an iFrame, can really hurt a web pages search engine ranking. This is because the search engines do not include any text in that fram as being part of the web page. So a webpage with a main heading and an iFrame full of writing, simply appears as a page with a single heading on it. And that is not seen as good content so down the ranking you go. As a result, it would have been better to let your site visitors scroll around than not to get read in the first place because they couldn’t find you on the search engines.

many customers come to me at my website design Southport business having experienced problems with previous designers incorrectly registering URLs for them. Instead of registering the customer’s domain name in the customer’s own name or business name, they have registered it to the design company’s name. When this happens various customers don’t even notice. They probably aren’t aware that the design company possibly will make a picking of who they say is the owner. It is only when problems occur at a later date that they realise it has gone wrong.

If you were setting up a shop on a busy high street and registering a new company name, then the last thing you should plan is that the landlord demands to be registered because the owner of the business name. You should expect them to be not involved, so that if you want to move to bigger premises at a later date you may possibly do so freely.

And the same should be said about websites. The domain name might be registered to the business or the owner of the business, not the person who creates the website. If in a year or two you want an update and to move to someone else, then you don’t want to be trapped and unable to continue trading with the same domain name.

There are loads of reasons why a designer would register a domain name in their own name. a quantity of innocent, various not. But I can see no valid reason for them doing so. It’s part of your business ? your website address ? so it should be registered to you.

The primarily reason this happens tends to be because the designer doesn’t understand or fully appreciate the implications. They register it to themselves since a mistake. Mostly, these will pass the domain name over to the customer when it’s moving and you then simply need to arrange for the official exchange of name.

But there are some that do it for other reasons. Apart from the customer not desiring to divulge their contact reasons, I’ve never seen any valid reasons in my years of Southport web design. various of these doubtless have other ideas in mind when they register the domain name.

For example, I’ve heard it said by several that they have registered the domain name for free. This is rubbish. You pay the invoice, that pays the costs. Why should they want to be the owner of your website name?

When you try to move to another designer a number of of these designers play awkward and refuse. They are trying to force you to stay as their customer. Worse still, if you concede the battle and the new designer creates a new domain name, you may possibly stumble on competitor services being publicised on your old website. This is the one you have been marketing for the past however long and your loyal customers are returning to.

Whatever you do, when getting a website built, ensure it is registered in your own name!

Access valuable points of view in the topic of one way links – your individual knowledge base.

Although particular of the domain name registration services insist in their rules that domain names are registered to the ultimate owner, rather than the designer of the site, many do not have this in their rules. And there is also an clear lack of verification that this is happening. It sounds basically a tiny administrative comment, but in my web design Southport services, I’ve regularly seen customers moving to us, and away form other designers who have caused them problems. And regularly these problems bring in or even centre around registering the domain name to themselves.

This is something that you must be especially aware of when you are having a website built and designed by someone else. Whether that someone else is a third party company or someone in your organisations, you might verify directly away that the domain has been correctly registered.

initially and foremost, when you are on hand with the terms and circumstances by a professional company take the time to read and understand them. If there are any position[ in there relating to the domain name, make sure they are fair. If there is a condition that the domain name will be registered to the designer, or even the name is owned by the designer, then ask why. It shouldn’t be. Even if they are offering it for ‘free’, you are paying for the cost in reality because part of the total build. If you begin to publicise the site and then fall out with them, you don’t want them to abuse your website’s domain name.

Assuming the terms and status state what you are entitled to uncover out of the work, e.g. a built and fully functioning website, then ask that it also includes that the URL is registered in your name. If they are uncertain, then you should ask them why. There’s no reason why they wouldn’t do this, providing that you have initially passed over a deposit prior to registration. You wouldn’t set up a new shop and obtain the business registered to your landlord. So why register the website name to your webdesigner?

Once they have registered your new domain name for you, check it on a Whois service straight away. because soon since it is registered and showing, you will be able to see the contact details. Make sure that you don’t hand over full payment before this point so that you may possibly leverage the position[ if needed. Running a Whois check is quite simple. Go into your favourite search engine and search for website owner lookup and go for one of the sites you find, and enter your own domain name.

If the owner is not you, carefully point it out to the designer and unearth them to correct it. If they are respectable, they will have no reason for not correcting it. In our Southport web design we insist all websites are registered to the owner. If they do not exchange it, ask them what they are hiding!

When you are hunting into getting a professional website designer to build a website for you, if you have not gone because of the process ahead of then you are perhaps pretty much open to whatever the designer says and does and trusting them from the beginning. There are loads of questions that you possibly want answering, but whereas all of these the designer no doubt answers, it may perhaps be the questions that you have not thought of that have the sting in the tail.

Unfortunately for customers, potentially fortunately for me, several of my customers arrive having had a bad knowledge of a previous designer and wishing to move. magnificent for me in that I’m going for up more customers, sad though that they have fallen for various, maybe unintentional, traps along the way. The problem is, unless you have suffered these yourself then you almost of course don’t know to check that you won’t become the next victim.

Now a lot of these problems are possibly not intended to cause problems. maybe in particular instances they are more intended to keep you because their customer. But this arm twisted behind the back method of customer retention is not what I plan for in my webdesign Southport business. I much prefer to keep customers happy and coming back!

The biggest problem that I see regularly is in registering domain names. On a side note, I much prefer to register domains than find the customer to do it, as it wastes more time transferring the hosting across than the URL overheads to register. But many designers don’t follow the rules when they register a domain name for their customers.

It doesn’t apply to the generic domain names, but with Nominet when you register a new domain name, it is in the rules that the contact name must be the name of the owner ? the name of the person ultimately paying for it. And for fantastic reason and why our Southport web design customers always have their contact details on their new websites I register for them.

What I see regularly happening is the designer registers the new domain name in their, or their design company’s, own name. A 12 months or two down the line and there’s a quantity of sort of fall out regards being too slow to make amendments to the site and the customer decides to move. Of course, having spent time, effort and money pushing[ the website they want to keep the same name. But the designer starts to uncover awkward. They demand to keep the site. They point out that the domain name was registered for ‘free’ because part of the build and it’s their name.

There are many reasons for this to happen. every now and then it possibly will be simply a mistake. But the thing to do is when you are ready to hand over the balance of payments is to check the Whois records for your website. If anyone other than you or your preferred contact is listed since the owner, obtain the designer to switch it earlier than you pay up. It possibly will merely save you a lot of trouble further down the line.

So What Is Web Design?

Posted by On July - 10 - 2009

Web design has played a massive part in our society for over ten years or so. The web design industry has created jobs, opportunity and even new words in the English dictionary. Web design to some people may seem utterly confusing, there are technical phrases and words that people will not understand and it does take time to get use to everything.

When a business or individual is considering getting a website created for them the first things you would think of is, where do I start? There are so many options and different companies for people to choose from out there and it is extremely over whelming to get into.

So, this article is a really rough sketch on the basics of web design. What it means, how much does it cost and what to be aware of! Firstly, web design and graphic design are two very different things. Graphic Design could anything from illustration, Logo Design, brand identity and advert design. Web design is strictly net based and will consist of a website built in ‘code’.

The best place to start in terms of finding someone to build you a good looking website would be Google or Yahoo! Both of these search engines are extremely relevant and accurate to web design services out there. If the web design agency is listed on the first page within Google you can already tell that the company itself is aware of online internet marketing and they know what they are doing.

Once you have typed in your search within Google or Yahoo! you can then click on the most appealing listing and look at the company’s website. First things to look out for are a contact telephone number (displayed clearly) and comprehensive information on clients they have worked with before. Even look out for customer testimonials as this will give you a good idea on who they have worked for before hand. If a web agency does not display their prices on their site it is not a terrible situation, normally companies who do display their prices on their site are companies who are just starting out or freelancers.
Once you contact the web design company make sure they treat you with respect and not talk down to you just becuase you are not ‘savvy’ with the web.

The goal of your website should be to guide the consumer through your page and have them take the action you desire, whether that action be a newsletter sign up or a sale.

Websites that make their visitors work to read them always turn a large percentage of potential consumers away. Text colors that clash with the background color, undersized fonts, and big blocks of text are some common problems that can determine whether or not the website is successful.

Here are 5 tips that will help you increase the flow and readability of your website:

1. Make the font size big enough to read. No matter who your target audience is they don’t want to strain their eyes trying to read tiny text. The standard internet text is Arial size 2 (12 pt). You can use other fonts and sizes if you wish but keep in mind that Arial size 2 is popular because it’s easy to read.

2. Format your text using CSS. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are the way to go – use one style sheet and control how text looks on your entire site. Make a change to the style sheet and your whole site is updated. It makes things a lot simpler.

3. Spell check everything. Misspellings make your website look tacky and unorganized. Nothing irritates visitors more than having to guess what your message is because the web page has spelling errors. It makes you look like you don’t care enough to get it right. Take a minute and use the spell check tool. Unless your writing a 200 page book, it should take you about 1 to 5 minutes to spell check your work.

4. Make the text contrast with its background. Black text on white background is the easiest to read. In most cases, the more contrast, the better. Black-on-white or white-on-black are examples of the highest contrast you can get. But be forewarned, white text on a black background creates a “glow” which often times negatively affect your website. Red on Blue creates the glow effect as well. You can use colors if you like, but as a rule of thumb if you have to squint to read your text, there’s not enough contrast.

5. Break up blocks of text. No matter how good a writer you are, people don’t want to read endless pages of text. Using sub-headlines between paragraphs and bullet points is a great way to break up those text blocks.

Generally, you should only use bullet points once throughout your web page, but in some cases using bullet points more than once might be necessary. If you’re selling a product or service you should always list the benefits. Bullet points change the pace of the writing and slow down the scanning.

Making your websites content more legible is easy and it doesn’t take a lot of time. Your website will look more professional and your visitors will tend to stick around longer, making those visitors more likely to become a customers.

Other companies, like YouTube – might only fetch a mere billion dollars. While many companies still go the traditional route of selling products and services online, and doing quite well judging from the massive increases in online sales, other companies sell nothing at all! They simply invite people to come and share some E-time with their site and collect advertising revenue in the process. Sites like Facebook have people willingly putting their demographic info into computer systems that allow advertisers to target a specific group of people. Want only women age 25-34 who are single Moms and work? How tough is it to hit that exact group with television advertising? But with online databases where people sign up so they can post and share their pictures, stories and even videos, the advertisers know exactly who they are reaching!

There are a million and one ways to make money on the Internet. And more and more would be entrepreneurs are discovering this and cashing in! Take a look at some figures from the U.S. Department of Commerce:

The most notable number in Business to Business was the manufacturing sector. Up only 9.9% year over year as a whole, E-Commerce manufacturing was up a whopping 27.1%!
But if you think that is something, take a look at the Business to Consumer Retail figure! As a whole retail eeked out a less than six and a half percent gain. But E-Commerce retail was up 22.2 percent! While total retail sales struggled compared to most other sectors, E-Commerce went through the roof!
These figures seem to make it clear that people have become quite content to shop online. But surely there is a preliminary report that would show us how we fare in 2007? Indeed there is, and the numbers continue to amaze:

We can again see that while the total retail sales may only be sloughing along at three to six percent as we compare current quarters to the year ago quarters (last two columns) we see that the E-Commerce retail figures continue well into the double digits, with most of the listed quarters reporting gains of more than twenty percent!

The United States, indeed the world is now embracing all forms of E-Commerce and there doesn’t appear to be any indication of that trend reversing anytime soon. For people thinking about becoming an online Entrepreneur the challenges are certainly present. But one would be hard pressed to name a better time to face these challenges!
