Cuba leases Guantánamo Bay to the United States (1903)

The US Guantánamo Bay Naval Base, sometimes called "GTMO" or "Gitmo," was established in Cuba in 1898. After Cuba gained its independence, the US assumed territorial control of Guantánamo Bay. Though the 1903 Cuban-American Treaty granted the US a perpetual lease of the area, the current Cuban government considers the American presence in Guantánamo to be an illegal occupation. Scientists One Step Closer to Curing Nut Allergies

Peanut allergy is the most common food allergy in the US and a leading cause of food-induced anaphylaxis, but scientists hope to change this. In a recent study, a team of British researchers successfully built up children’s tolerance to peanuts by giving them small daily doses of peanut flour. The four children involved in the study were once described as severely allergic to peanuts, but by the end of the trial, each participant could ingest the equivalent of at least five peanuts without having a reaction. In order to maintain their tolerance, the children must continue to eat five peanuts a day. More on the subject...
